The United Nations General Assembly have passed a resolution calling for Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad to step down, rather than wait for planned elections.

Although the resolution is non-binding (no legal authority) it is one step closer to an official intervention, and shows clear intent from 137 countries to overthrow another sovereign leader.

12 nations opposed the resolution including Russia, China, Iran and Venezuela.

The measure requested Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and all relevant United Nations bodies to support the Arab League’s ongoing efforts to resolve the crisis peacefully, something currently impossible with Western commanders on the ground directing the rebels and weapons coming through Turkey from Israel, the new NATO backed Libyan regime and France.
