It's ridiculous. Back home in the states, people are also joking about it. Here in China, I work with a lot of expat Koreans and they take it DEAD seriously and can't understand why I laugh about it. I tell them the following statistics and they don't believe me. U.S. NIAID (National Institue of Allergy and Infectious Diseases) average number of "regular flu" deaths per year: about 20,000. The CDC (Center for Disease Control) has roughly the same number. CNN.com has it as high as 36,000 (U.S.), 250k-500k (worldwide). U.S. Swine Flu deaths (total TO DATE): 263 (Highest number I could find). ECDC (European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control)Worldwide Swine Flu deaths (total as of July 18, 2009): 732 I didn't just pull these numbers out of my ass. They are all out there and pretty easy to find. Don't just trust Wiki...check out the mentioned organizations websites. People here are canceling vacations abroad because of Swine Flu Paranoia.
