I think it is interesting that Gibraltar was handed over by Spain in 1713, by signing the Treaty of Utrech, not to the UK but to the "crown of Great Britain" i.e. the City of London. Therefore when Spain asks for Gibraltar back, they are asking the wrong people, the British Government cannot hand Gibraltar back, because it isn't theirs to give. The self determination thing is a smokescreen to cover up this basic fact.

Apparently according to information from Edward VIIths daughter, Hitler was the son of George V, and Angela Merkel is the artificially inseminated daughter of Hitler.Don't you think they all look rather alike.Camilla's great grandmother I think was also a mistress of Edward VII.How many were there? Can anyone tell me if the City of London was hit by any bombs at all or Buckingham Palace or the Houses of Parliament or were the German bombers just unlucky. My mother and father in law deserve all the credit as spotters and anti aircraft gunners at Plymouth striking with limited succes their mission was to force the planes off course away from the City of Londonby an ack ack barrage rather then hitting the aircraft. There was no specsavers then for these 2 heros guzzling pints of Courage directors and a nip of mothers ruin. Some interesting documents discovered in the University clearly stated elite education system was investing in the reconstruction of Germany and Japan either before the war or during.

mandalisj, I suggest you look into "Greek" Prince Philips past. He's not Mountbatten, he's in fact a member of the House of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg. A VERY Nazi bunch of thugs. He's even photographed in his youth attending funerals of Nazi's, standing next to SS officers.

Not exactly the actions of an Anti-Nazi.... is it.

Just to remind Jennifer, that the "Windsors" changed their name on 17 July 1917, when George V changed the name of his family from the German Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.

Incidenrtally, "Greek" Prince Philip is in fact a member of the House of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg, a branch of the House of Oldenburg. He actually adopted the name Mountbatten. Which is funny in itself, because that's just an Anglacised version of the German Battenberg (as in cake).

So how NOT GERMAN are they really?

Jennifer. The Queen may be related to Henry VIII and his daughter Queen Mary but Henry was a dirty vicious old man and as for Mary – least said better – but she was not called Bloody Mary for nothing. She was like her father a murderer. As the bloodline is officially carried through the males I think you will find that the “British” royals are essentially Germans. Not that it matters. A nation gets the “leaders it deserves” so as a nation the UK does not have much to be proud of considering the character of our leaders. Oh and also its (1) “Great Britain” (2) “merely” (3) ” Majesty”

If you had ever taken the great tour they give at the Tower of London, you would know that the reason why the Tower was originally built was because William I could conquer all of England, but could not stop the merchants of the City of London from getting resupplied from the river Thames. Hence, he built a fortress right next to the little enclave and they have all been making money ever since. I would recommend starting down at the City in the morning to see the hustle and bustle and then heading to the Tower after lunch for the afternoon.

The Crown, has nothing to do with the city. It is a corporation sole that rules over the United Kingdom. The City of London Corporation is not the same as The Crown Corporation.

Another issue that is frequently used to slander the British royals is that they are alleged Nazis or of Nazi descent which is completely ignorant of the fact that Elizabeth II reigns because her relative before her in line was a personal friend of Hitler, and was photographed giving Hitler the full Nazi seig heil salute. He didn't have to abdicate because he wanted to marry a commoner, he was already King and could have married anyone he wanted. He had to abdicate because England was not sympathetic to his friendliness with the German government. If Elizabeth II is such a Nazi, then why did Hitler call her mother the most dangerous woman in Europe? Clearly, the Windsors are definitely not pro-Nazi and rule England because they were against the Nazis.

My post was in fact constructive criticism and you only reinforce my perception of you being defensive by reacting in such a touchy manner.

St Paul's Cathedral is a major feature of the City of London and I mentioned the very well-known image of it standing relatively unscathed while all around was rubble. The point is that the City most certainly WAS being targeted by German bombers during the Blitz. Here's another shot of a bomb that ripped a massive hole between the Bank of England and the Stock Exchange: http://www.thesquaremilewalk.com/walks/blitz/images/bank_station.jpg.

Re "I consider there to be enough anomalies to say that it is not part of England."

It's certainly a peculiar place, although I haven't seen anything yet that *really* justifies the statement that the City is "not part of England". There are certainly some differences from the average English borough - the fact that it is almost entirely non-residential, for one thing. It does have some of the ceremonial trappings of an archaic city-state but it is part of the same legal system (both criminal and civil), does not have its own armed forces (saying it has its own police force doesn't make it a separate city-state any more than the British Transport Police makes the rail network not part of England), uses the same currency and in just about every general aspect that I can think of is fully integrated into both the surrounding metropolis and country..

You say it's a "mute [sic] point" about the Corporation of London being a private corporation. I think you'll find that many town councils up and down the country used to call themselves municipal corporations, so I'm not really sure how this in itself proves that the Corporation of London is unlike other English councils... ;)
This is the kind of thing I was getting at when I mentioned you mixing up truths, half-truths and conjecture - the fact that the City of London's council calls itself the "Corporation of London" is a bit of a "so what?" really.

Re financial backing of Hitler, this might well be a fruitful area of research. I appreciate it's an old article and that you're planning a rewrite. I only found it because I happened to be looking for info on the City of London myself, so hopefully you'll at least be pleased about its search engine ranking. ;)
